Secondary Faculty Weekly Memo

30 August 2024

FROM THE OFFICE

Dear Parents and Learners

Finally, Spring is in the air!  We are delighted with the good weather for the official opening of our Astro turf tonight and hope you will join us.  The campus is busy tonight, as we also have the opening of the Gr 10 & 11 Visual Arts Exhibition in the Innovation Centre and the Cape Town Music Eisteddfod in the Minor Hall of the Mozart Centre.

Next week is equally busy with the Grade 9 Market Day, our Inter-house Spelling Bee contest, the Grade 10 Unicorn Awards and the Grade 10 Dance on Friday night.

Thank you to Fabianna Vermeulen who captured the beautiful image below ...

Uniforms

Please ensure that learners' blazers are in good quality and looking pristine or replace it with the new blazer.  When a learner represents the College, it is most embarrassing if the colour has faded or the blazer does not fit properly.

Please also note that the blue checked trousers have been replaced by grey trousers.  At the end of the winter season (the start of the Spring Quarter), girls may only wear the dress or grey trousers.  The checked trousers may only be worn by the chefs in the Hospitality kitchen.

From the English Department

“Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.”

This quarter’s book lineup is a rollercoaster ride – packed with mysteries, romances, and everything in between! With the cold weather upon us, there is no better excuse to curl up with a hot beverage and a good book.

Your bookworm-in-training should have devoured two personal picks by now, with another two to go, in order to submit enough book reports for the year. We're crossing our fingers these recommendations spark some curiosity to explore beyond your comfort zone.

Get cozy and dive in! Happy Reading!

FEEDBACK

Leadership Camp

The Grade 11s attended the annual Leadership Camp at the Waterval Country Lodge in Tulbagh. It was a weekend of bonding, as a Grade, as learners embraced their role as the new seniors at the College.  The rotation sessions were hosted by the Parklands College educators. These sessions included Ethical scenarios, The Parklands Way, A School Where I Belong and Leadership Basics.

The learners spoke about their journey and experiences at the College, practised war cries, created a matric motto and spoke about their vision as the Class of 2025. The camp facilitators initiated outdoor group challenges and fun social activities including a hike to the famed waterfall where learners relaxed in the rockpools. The learners attended courses on governance and disc personality profiling and its importance in leadership.

Information about the Prefect application process was shared with interested participants. Our Executive Prefects and a few members of the Prefect Body visited on Saturday to share their leadership wisdom and experiences. We look forward to seeing what the Grade 11s have to offer at the Leadership Assembly on 6 September 2024.

Guest speaker

Sarah Hoffman from Klikd

Sarah is a social media lawyer who spoke to the learners on Monday about being aware of their personal brand on social media.  She warned them about the dangers of predators online and of being responsible - or even just part of - derogatory comments on social media platforms.  Please continue this discussion at home.

From the Secondary Head of Sport

This week we afforded our educators, coaches and learners a well deserved break.  We have a short two week Summer pre-season which will  commence on Monday.  Emails have been sent out to all parents regarding dates and times and learners are expected to attend all practices until the end of the quarter.  We are in the process of confirming matches for the 4th quarter and therefore encourage you to check the sport calendar for daily updates.

Last Saturday, our U14 A & B and U16 Hockey Girls faced off against Melkbosstrand High School. Despite a hard-fought effort, our U14B team narrowly lost 2-0, and our U14A team came up just short with a 2-1 loss. However, our U16 girls held their ground, securing a 1-1 draw.  We played really well considering that Melkbosstrand has put enormous effort into hockey since last year.  With our summer programme starting next quarter we know that we will catch up before the start of next season.

Looking Ahead

Next week Saturday (7 September) our U16 and U19 Rugby Boys will participate in the Tableview Sevens tournament held at Theo Marais Park.  Matches start from 08:00 with the last match at 20:00

Astro Grand Opening - Tonight

After a few months of fine tuning we are ready to officially open our double Astro facility this evening and we would like to invite our Parklands family to celebrate this momentous occasion with us.  Our boys and girls will compete against Edgemead High School. The highlight for all learners will be the guest appearance of Erin Christie, the South African Hockey Captain.  Both our National Hockey teams have made South Africa proud with their performance at the Olympics.  Erin will be joined by Kayla de Waal and team Manager, Lynn Abrahamse.

LIVE EISTEDDFOD @ Parklands College

We are excited to announce that the Cape Town Eisteddfod is taking place today in our Minor Hall. Please refer to the schedule by clicking this Cape Town Eisteddfod Programme.

Supporters Welcome: We encourage our performers to invite family and friends to enjoy their performance! A R20 entrance fee applies to all non-performers. If you leave the venue, an additional entrance fee will be required upon re-entry. Payments can be made via Snapscan or Credit Card (no cash).

Performing for Judges: You’ll perform in front of an external adjudicator. It’s normal to feel nervous, but remember that their feedback is meant to help you grow, not just to assess your performance.

Feedback: After all performances in a category, the adjudicator will provide feedback, which may be written or spoken, to help you understand your strengths and areas for improvement. This feedback will be shared with the audience, so everyone benefits from the learning experience.

Participating is a major accomplishment! Demonstrating courage, skill, and dedication—be proud of your journey.

We look forward to seeing you there and wish you all the best for your performances!

We're looking forward to  a few debut performances at our next Brunchtime concert ....
