16 OCTOBER 2026
16 OCTOBER 2026
Welcome to our final academic quarter of 2026! I hope our learners and families enjoyed a restful break and are feeling refreshed and ready for the weeks ahead.
As we look back on the end of last quarter, we encourage parents to visit our social media pages to enjoy the highlights from our Valedictory, Locking the Legacy and the many other special moments that brought our school year to life.
This blog is dedicated to celebrating the wonderful achievements of our learners during the school holidays. We are always proud of the ways in which our learners challenge themselves, pursue their passions and make the most of the opportunities available to them.
Our Matrics have begun their NSC examinations, marking a particularly significant time in the school calendar. For our younger learners, there are still many opportunities to learn, grow, explore and celebrate achievements before the year draws to a close.
Let us embrace this final stretch with enthusiasm, kindness and commitment, making every day count as we work together to finish 2026 on a positive note.
Start of Quarter Assembly
MAIN GATE ACCESS
The safety and security of our learners remain our highest priority. For this reason, access through the main entrance gate is permitted only to vehicles displaying a valid Parklands College access sticker or to visitors who have completed the required scanning and registration procedures.
Our security guards are simply carrying out their duties and ensuring that the necessary safety protocols are followed. We kindly ask for your understanding, patience and cooperation as we support them in maintaining a safe environment for everyone at the College. Thank you for helping us keep our learners safe.
Our Prefects were ready at the clocking-in stations and waiting to welcome learners back to campus for the final quarter! There was lots of laughter and excitement as learners reunited with friends and shared their holiday stories.
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, staff added a touch of pink to their outfits, while our Service Prefects handed out pink ribbons and fizzers at the clocking-in stations.
It was a lovely way to begin the quarter, bringing smiles, spreading awareness and reminding us of the importance of supporting one another.
Our Academic Prefects delivered a special motivational message to learners, sharing their vision of an environment where everyone is encouraged to challenge themselves, learn from one another and take pride in their progress. They reminded learners that you do not need to have had a perfect year to finish strong. They concluded with an inspiring quote from Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
Our educators will be available online early next week for any parents who would like to meet with an educator or touch base regarding their child’s progress. Should you wish to arrange a meeting, please click on the link provided in the document below to book a suitable time slot.

NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE (NSC) EXAMS
Our Grade 12 Class of 2026 has officially begun the final stretch of their school journey, with the National Senior Certificate examinations now well underway.
It has already been a busy week for our Matrics, who have written CAT Practical, IT Practical, English Paper 3, Economics Paper 1, Design Paper 1 and Further Studies Physics. On Thursday, 15 October, the Grade 12s sat their English Paper 3 examination, marking another important milestone in their final examination programme.
After months of preparation, revision and commitment, our learners now have the opportunity to demonstrate all that they have learnt throughout their time at Parklands College. With several weeks of examinations still ahead, we encourage them to remain focused, manage their time carefully and approach each paper one at a time.
We are incredibly proud of the Class of 2026 and wish each of our Matrics strength, confidence and perseverance for the examinations ahead. The entire Parklands College community is behind you as you work towards the finish line.

Absenteeism during Exams and Assessments
A complete assessment portfolio (SBA - school based assessment), including all November examinations, is required for promotion into the next grade.
A learner can not be permitted to write the final exam should the SBA component be incomplete.
Should a learner be absent for the final examination without a valid reason, the learner will not be promoted to the next grade. A valid reason in this context includes the following:
a) illness, supported by a valid medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner;
b) humanitarian reasons, which include the death of an immediate family member, supported by a death certificate;
c) the learner appearing in a court hearing, which must be supported by written evidence; or
d) any other reason as may be accepted as valid by the Head of the assessment body.
Note that extended holiday breaks and travel do not constitute a valid reason.

PARKLANDS YOUNG SCIENCTISTS ENGAGING WITH UNIVERSITIES AND STEM EXPERTS
Gerhard Vosloo and I presented at the “Reimagining STEM Education: Shaping STE*M Education” Conference
Mr Don Duffield and Gerhard Vosloo, our Head Boy, had the wonderful privilege of presenting “From Learner to Scientist and Engineer: Exploring the Development of Scientific and Engineering Identities Through Authentic STEM Experiences in South Africa” at the “Reimagining STEM Education: Shaping STE*M Education” Conference, held at the Stellenbosch University Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS).
The presentation explored the value of authentic STEM experiences - including IYPT, SAYPT, EXPO and the opportunities provided through the Parklands College STAR Programme - in developing the identities of talented young people as future scientists and engineers. Our work was shared with STEM academics and educators from Germany, Belgium, the USA, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.
Kaylee-Jade Mestre and Liat Demissew presented their research to professional scientists at UCT
Kaylee-Jade Mestre, a Grade 11 learner at Parklands College, had the opportunity to present her research on two of the IYPT problems she investigated for the 39th International Young Physicists’ Tournament in Zurich.
She first presented her research into the “Oil Flow” problem to the Non-Linear Dynamics Research Unit at UCT. She subsequently presented her research into the “Self-starting Siphon” problem to Professor Arnaud Malan and his Industrial Computational Fluid Dynamics team at UCT.
Liat Demissew, Captain of Team South Africa at IYPT 2026, also presented her research into the “Singing Ruler” problem to the Non-Linear Dynamics Research Unit at UCT.
These presentations led to meaningful discussions and valuable feedback from professional scientists. There is perhaps no better way for young physicists to deepen their understanding than by sharing their research with practising scientists and engaging in discussions about their work.
A BIG THANK YOU to UCT’s Applied Mathematics Faculty and the Industrial Computational Fluid Dynamics team for providing these wonderful opportunities for our learners. A further BIG THANK YOU to Team South Africa’s Team Leader and IOC Representative, Frank Smuts, for organising these valuable opportunities.
These experiences demonstrate the incredible value of providing our learners with opportunities to move beyond the classroom, engage with professional scientists and experience what it means to be part of the wider scientific community."
Mr Duffield

SAICA BUSINESS GAMES
On Saturday, 19 September, a team of Parklands College learners had the opportunity to participate in the SAICA Business Games, hosted at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
The Business Games provided learners with an opportunity to step beyond the classroom and engage with practical business challenges in a dynamic and collaborative environment. They played a similation of Intern CA(SA), which simulates a trainee's progression in an audit firm form the first year to the third. Throughout the day, learners were encouraged to apply their knowledge, think critically, work as a team and develop their problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Our learners thoroughly enjoyed the experience and embraced the opportunity to engage with fellow learners while gaining valuable insight into the world of business and the accounting profession.
We are proud of the way our team conducted themselves throughout the event and represented Parklands College. Thank you to SAICA and UWC for providing our learners with this valuable and engaging experience.

Google form to confirm accommodations (link)
Please note that Readers and Scribes for exams must be organised directly by the parents and an external qualified Reader and Scribe. The College is not responsible for sourcing Readers and Scribes nor any financial arrangements.
Please contact Michelle Holdsworth: 0827209970 if you are looking for a certified Reader/Scribe for the upcoming exams. Please ensure that all Readers and Scribes have the correct certification and please forward that certification to the College (sjscott@parklands.co.za) before exams start.
(All learners that make use of extra time or spelling accommodations, will still receive their accommodation stickers and will write in their class venue as per usual - this form is just for separate venue arrangements).
We are pleased to share that our digital Exam Portal has now been successfully rolled out across the College for formal examination sessions. The system has proven to be secure, accessible, and user-friendly, offering an effective way for learners to receive reading and scribing accommodations without the need for in-person support. We will be moving towards all learners making use of Exam Portal in our efforts to support their potential in a sustainable and efficient manner.
Learners who qualify for a reader and/or scribe are granted access to a secure online platform during examinations.
The portal reads the exam aloud at the learner’s preferred pace.
Learners may type their answers directly onto the platform or request a printed script, if needed.
It ensures fairness, independence, and consistency for all learners who require assistance.
Is recognised by the Education Department as being suitable for NSC Grade 12 exams.
There will be a fee of R150 per exam paper/session, regardless of the length or duration of the paper.
The Exam Portal will be available for examinations only and, once enrolled, learners will be able to make use of the system for all exams up until the end of Grade 12.
As we continue to adopt more inclusive and sustainable assessment practices, the Exam Portal provides a modern, affordable alternative to relying on human readers and scribes, especially during busy examination periods.
In addition, this approach encourages greater independence and self-sufficiency, which is an essential skill for life beyond the school environment, where physical readers and scribes may not always be available. Learners can become more confident using digital support tools that are increasingly used at tertiary level and in the workplace.
We encourage parents to consider this option as the most efficient support process going forward. If you would like to register your child for the Exam Portal, or if you have any questions, please contact Samantha Scott: sjscott@parklands.co.za.
Thank you for supporting our ongoing efforts to provide effective assessment accommodations for learners at the College.
Global Education will be hosting an informative evening in Cape Town where our experienced team will guide your students' parents through the study abroad journey, explore available options, and give them peace of mind when making this life-changing decision.
The session is open to the public and we invite your students' parents to attend. Students are welcome to attend with their parents.

Congratulations to all our sports awards recipients who were acknowledged at our Sport Awards on 18 September. Certificates were presented for achievements in non-College sport, while half colours, certificates, medals, colours, honours and trophy awards recognised learners for their achievements and contribution to sport. Well done to each learner for their dedication and hard work.
We value the contribution of all our learners who participate in sport at the College, as well as those who support their peers from the sidelines. Both are important parts of our sporting community.
We were honoured to welcome Mr Luc Van der Hofstadt, owner of Mentally Fit, as our guest speaker. His address, The Champions Mindset: From Silo Culture into Legacy Culture, challenged us to think beyond results and consider what it takes to build a winning culture and leave a lasting legacy.
Key takeaways from his address included:
Develop a champion’s mindset: Progress from participation to performance, from performance to winning, and ultimately towards creating a lasting legacy.
Understand your purpose: Know why you do what you do, what drives you, and what you want to achieve. A clear purpose helps guide the decisions and actions needed to reach your goals.
Develop the whole athlete: Sporting performance depends on physical, mental and emotional capabilities. Athletes need to be physically fit, mentally sharp and emotionally equipped to perform under pressure and contribute to their teams.
Build a winning culture: Success requires shared values, commitment and accountability. Moving away from a silo culture means working towards a common purpose rather than operating in isolation.
Think beyond winning: Results matter, but so does the impact we have on others. A legacy is built through our contribution, the example we set and the difference we make to those around us.
Keep it simple and make it visible: Clear goals, shared values and consistent actions turn intentions into progress. Understanding the future we want to create should shape what we do today.
Luc’s message was a timely reminder that sport is about more than the result on the scoreboard. It is about developing capable athletes, building a strong sporting culture and creating an impact that lasts beyond an individual season.
Summer sport training is back in full swing. Please communicate any concerns to the relevant sports staff, and ensure that learners arrive at training in the correct kit and are ready to participate.
We always love to hear of our learners' external sports achievements. Please email a short blurb along with 3 high-quality photographs (1 Mb minimum) to External Sport News.
