Grade 10 and 11 Design Learners Shine in Practical Exam

The Practical Exam for Grade 10 and 11 Design learners showcased their creativity, technical skills, and innovative thinking as they undertook unique design challenges. This year’s exams provided an exciting opportunity for learners to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, creating designs that were both functional and aesthetically impressive. Here’s a look at the two projects that truly brought out the best in our budding designers.

The Grade 10 learners were tasked with designing and presenting packaging for a 3D printed item. This project was a great introduction to the world of modern manufacturing and design technology. The learners had to consider not just the visual appeal of their packaging, but also its functionality and sustainability.

The challenge for the Grade 11 learners was to design packaging for a food item within the Food Design sphere. This project required them to think about how packaging can communicate the essence of a food product while also considering factors such as preservation, branding, and consumer experience.

Designs ranged from practical and functional to artistic and conceptual. Many learners focused on creating eye-catching packaging that would stand out on store shelves, using vibrant colors, unique shapes, and innovative printing techniques. Others emphasized sustainability, opting for biodegradable or recyclable packaging that would reduce waste and promote eco-consciousness.

Farewell to Mr Pillay

Mr Pillay joined the College in 2012 to establish the Engineering Graphics and Design Department.  Within a short period of time, we became one of the top-performing schools in the Western Cape, in EGD.

In 2018, he was appointed Head of Secondary Sport.  His commitment and passion led to tremendous growth in our Sports Department.  He organised and coordinated numerous tours - both locally and internationally - and ensured that we became competitive in all the sports we offered.

He has worked tirelessly to find Derby partners, bringing many visitors to our campus by hosting various tournaments.

Thank you, Mr Pillay, for everything you have done for Sport at the College.  Go well.
