There is a growing sense of excitement around the College as we head into Derby Day week,  one of the highlights of our sporting calendar. This Friday and Saturday, our teams will take on Somerset College in what promises to be an exciting weekend of competition, school spirit and camaraderie.

A Derby is about much more than the final score. It is about the pride of representing your school, the privilege of wearing your team kit, the support of your teammates and the excitement of competing against another school. It is also an opportunity for our learners to demonstrate the values we hold dear -  commitment, sportsmanship, resilience, respect and teamwork.

The anticipation has been building throughout the week as our learners have prepared for their various fixtures. We wish every team the very best as they take to the field. Sporting success is measured not only by the results, but by how we compete, how we treat our opponents and how we support one another.

And to our Parklands parents, we would love to see you there! Your support from the sidelines makes such a difference to our learners and contributes to the atmosphere that makes Derby Day so special. Bring your voices, your enthusiasm and, of course, plenty of Parklands spirit!

HPV VACCINATION

The HPV vaccination is available at many clinics. This is an important opportunity to protect young people against HPV-related diseases, and we encourage parents to speak to their healthcare provider or local clinic for more information.

GRADE 12 PRELIMINARY TRIAL EXAMINATIONS

3D PRINTING BRINGS THE BOHR MODEL TO LIFE

Our Grade 7 Science learners took their understanding of the Bohr model of the atom into the world of 3D printing. Using our 3D printers, they created physical models of atoms, giving them a hands-on way to visualise and engage with a concept that can otherwise feel quite abstract.

The models have also found a second purpose beyond the Science lesson: they can be used as tactile learning tools, supporting concentration and focus for learners who benefit from having something to engage with while learning.

It is a wonderful example of how technology, purposeful learning and creativity can come together to make learning more engaging and accessible.

BREAK TIME...

GRADE 9s EXPLORE TECH AND INNOVATION AT THE AWS (AMAZON WEB SERVICES) SKILLS CENTER

Over the past two Fridays, our Grade 9 learners had the incredible opportunity to step beyond the classroom and visit the AWS Skills Center in Cape Town.

As an Apple Distinguished School, we are always looking for ways to build on our learners' digital skills and this hands-on excursion did just that. During the interactive Working Backwards Workshop, learners worked in teams to solve real-world challenges, develop value propositions and pitch their own app designs to their peers. They were also exposed to the use of AI in building their apps.

The day concluded with a fast-paced Cloud Discovery Scavenger Hunt, where learners explored cutting-edge cloud infrastructure first-hand. It was a fantastic and inspiring experience that connected classroom learning directly to real-world careers in technology.

GRADE 12 ISIXHOSA FINAL ORAL MODERATION

Well done to our Grade 12 isiXhosa learners on successfully completing their final oral moderation!

Our candidates impressed the moderator with their well-prepared speeches, unprepared speaking, confidence and command of the language. Their commitment, preparation and hard work were evident throughout the moderation.

We are incredibly proud of the way our learners represented themselves and our school.

STAR PROGRAMME LEARNERS EXPLORE SOUTH AFRICA'S SPACE INDUSTRY

As part of the Parklands College STAR Programme, 17 learners recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the Cape Constellation Space Innovation Hub in Somerset West, gaining first-hand insight into South Africa’s growing space industry.

The excursion exposed learners to a number of South African space-industry entrepreneurs and innovators, who shared their experiences and expertise in the rapidly developing space sector. Learners discovered the vital role that satellites play in modern society, from communications and navigation to Earth observation, environmental monitoring and scientific research.

One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity to see how space-grade circuit boards are manufactured in a specialised clean-room environment. Learners were able to see first-hand the extraordinary levels of precision, quality control and attention to detail required when producing electronic systems designed for the harsh environment of space. This provided a fascinating connection between the theoretical concepts they encounter in their STEM studies and the highly specialised engineering processes used in the real world.

Importantly, the visit highlighted South Africa’s significant contribution to the global space industry and the exciting opportunities available to young people who are interested in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The entrepreneurs also shared valuable words of wisdom about career choices, perseverance and purpose. Learners were encouraged not simply to choose careers for personal success, but to consider how their knowledge, skills and innovation could make a meaningful contribution to South Africa’s economy and the lives of its people.

For the STAR learners, the excursion provided a valuable connection between what they learn in the classroom and the real-world challenges and opportunities being addressed by South African scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs.

The 17 learners were accompanied by Mr Don Duffield, STAR Programme Coordinator, and Mrs Jolandi Gibson.

The visit was a wonderful reminder that South Africa has an important role to play in the future of space exploration and technology—and that today’s learners could become tomorrow’s space scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and innovators.

2026 ESKOM EXPO FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS CAPE TOWN REGIONAL FINALS

Parklands College learners achieved outstanding results at the 2026 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Cape Town Regional Finals, held at the UCT Sports Centre this week.

The regional event brought together 333 young scientists from 44 schools, presenting an impressive 240 projects. The Expo celebrates curiosity, scientific enquiry, innovation and problem-solving, giving learners the opportunity to present their research and engage with judges in a rigorous scientific environment.

Our Parklands College learners rose to the occasion, achieving an exceptional collection of medals and special awards across both the Preparatory and Secondary Faculties.

An Outstanding Medal Haul

Our Preparatory Faculty learners achieved:

• 2 Gold medals

• 4 Silver medals

• 1 Highly Commended award

Our Secondary Faculty learners achieved:

• 9 Gold medals

• 6 Silver medals

• 2 Bronze medals

In addition to these impressive results, several Parklands College projects received prestigious category and special awards.

Best in Category
Veer Atwaru and Luan Odendaal (Grade 10) also received a Best in Category award.

Mayor's Award
Madison Wehrley (Grade 10) received the Mayor's Award, a wonderful recognition of the quality and impact of her work.

Eskom Award
Veer Atwaru and Luan Odendaal (Grade 10) added to their achievements by receiving the Eskom Award for Best Energy Project.

Royal Society of Chemistry Award
The Royal Society of Chemistry recognised Wanda Masindi and Liam Govender.

Best Environmental Awards
Israa Adams, as well as Isabella Manickum and Yemira Mamdoo, received recognition for Best Environmental projects.

UCT Sport Science Prize
Noah Fick and Yaseen Salie were recognised with a UCT Sport Science Prize.

On to the International Science Fair!

A particularly exciting conclusion to the Regional Finals was the announcement of learners selected to progress to the International Science Fair (ISF) in Boksburg. We are incredibly proud that Israa Adams and Phoenix Srdic have been invited to represent the Cape Town region at the next stage of the competition.

These results are a remarkable reflection of the curiosity, perseverance and commitment of our young scientists. Behind every project are many hours of questioning, investigating, experimenting, analysing and refining ideas. Congratulations to every learner who represented Parklands College at the Regional Finals. Whether recognised with a medal, special award or the opportunity to progress further, reaching this level is an achievement in itself.

We also extend our sincere thanks to the educators, mentors and families who supported our learners throughout the research and preparation process.

SPIRIT WEEK AHEAD OF DERBY WEEKEND

STAFF vs LEARNERS

Thursday, 13 August brought plenty of energy, laughter and competitive spirit to campus as our staff and learners faced off in the much-anticipated Staff vs Learners Netball and Soccer matches during break. The courts and field quickly became the place to be, with learners gathering to support their friends and educators while the teams battled it out for bragging rights.

Both matches were played in great spirit. The netball court saw quick passes, interceptions and determined shooting, while the soccer match brought plenty of pace, skill and enthusiasm from both sides. There were some seriously competitive moments, but just as many laughs as staff and learners enjoyed the opportunity to compete against one another outside the classroom. These break-time matches are always a wonderful way to build school spirit and create moments of connection across the campus. They also give learners the chance to see a slightly different side of their educators, this time swapping lesson plans for sports shoes!

Thank you to everyone who took part and to the learners who came out to support the teams. Judging by the energy on the field and court, the Staff vs Learners rivalry is still going strong!

GRADE 9 VOLUNTEERISM IN ACTION

This week, our Grade 9 learners put their learning into action as they explored the topic of volunteerism in Life Orientation. Learners considered the importance of volunteerism, individual and community responsibility, and the role that community-based and non-profit organisations play in supporting social well-being.

To conclude the topic, learners participated in a practical volunteer initiative during their Life Orientation lessons. Building on our Nelson Mandela Day activities from last quarter, they used the remaining ingredients to prepare love sandwiches for Sam’s Educare and assemble Soup in a Jar packs for FeedMe SA.

Thank you to the learners and families who supported the initiative through voluntary donations of bread and clean glass jars. Your contributions helped make the activity possible. It was wonderful to see our Grade 9 learners working together with purpose and demonstrating the values of service, responsibility and care for their community.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVERS TOUR 2027

Travel & Sport has shared information regarding the 2027 STADIO Academic Achievers Tour, which is open to interested learners currently in Grades 7 to 10.

The 2027 programme offers four possible international destinations:

• USA

• United Kingdom

• Australia

• Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Depending on the selected tour, learners may have the opportunity to visit and experience leading international universities and educational institutions, including universities such as Harvard, Yale, MIT and Oxford.

Learners and families who would like to find out more about the programme, destinations, dates and costs are invited to visit the Travel & Sport website.

Information packs are also available for collection from Reception.

Please note that this is an independently organised tour and participation is arranged directly between interested families and Travel & Sport.

In addition to the official DBE timetable, all Grade 12 learners have been provided with a Grade 12 Timeline for the remainder of the academic year. This document highlights key dates and milestones, including examination-related deadlines, revision opportunities, practical assessments, matric events and other important school commitments.

Learners are encouraged to keep both the DBE timetable and the Grade 12 Timeline readily accessible and to use them when planning their academic, personal and extracurricular commitments for the remainder of the year.

Today and tomorrow, our learners will travel to Somerset College for one of the biggest events on our school calendar. Derby Day is a celebration of sport, school spirit, culture, teamwork and the pride that comes with representing Parklands College.

To all our teams participating and competing this weekend, we wish you the very best. Play with purpose, compete with pride and give your very best from the first whistle to the last. Remember that you are representing more than just yourselves. You are representing your teammates, your coaches, your families and the Parklands community.

Access to Campus

Please note that for security reasons, no parents or visitors are allowed past the Admin building during the week without reporting to reception.  We have instructed our learners and staff to ask anyone without a Visitor's Badge to report to reception.

No Dogs Allowed

Please note that the College does not allow animals, especially dogs, on campus, except in the following cases:

• Officially registered guide or support dogs (with the necessary harness).

• Pets owned by personnel residing on campus for security purposes.

Lost Cellphones

Almost on a daily basis, we are asked to assist with finding lost cellphones.  It has become an impossible task and we simply cannot expect staff to actively look for misplaced cellphones.  We provide adequate facilities for the learners to lock their devices away.

If a learner misplaces or loses their cellphone, parents are required to report the missing device to the local police station.

Learners need to complete a report about the missing device at the reception of the ICT desk in the event that it is handed in.

AirPods

We do not look for missing AirPods.  Learners have been told that they should rather not bring AirPods to school, as they get lost easily.
