Secondary Faculty: 7 April 2025
Secondary Faculty: 7 April 2025
Welcome back for the Autumn Quarter.
In today's blog we share the arrangements for the start of the new quarter. On Friday we will report back on the many exciting events which took place during the last week of the Summer Quarter and the school holiday. Please send us any feedback you may have on your children's achievements outside of school.
This is an examination quarter and we would like to bring to your attention that QUESTION PAPERS WILL BE WRITTEN UNTIL THE LAST DAY, 25 JUNE.
Please support us by ensuring that all learners are immaculately dressed and groomed when returning to school tomorrow. We are taking official individual photographs of all the learners this week.
Please see guidelines lower down on how to book online appointments with your children's educators to discuss Summer Quarter reports.
Please use secondary@parklands.co.za if you are unsure about who to contact. Your mail will be directed to the correct person.
Please click on the tabs at the top of the Memo to access useful information: Calendars, Academic info and Assessment Calendars, Uniform requirements and Operational Information (including Parent&Learner Directory, EDANA app instructions and KARRI app guidelines for use at Kauai)
We have updated the Parent & Learner Directory on 28 February with information regarding the security of electronic devices (iPads and Laptops.)

Learners from Grade 7 – 12 have the opportunity to receive additional support in Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy on campus, should they feel the need for one-on-one or small group support. Our Mathematics Department will continue to offer tutorials as per the tutorial schedule and these tutorials are covered by the tuition fees.
Mrs Priscilla Brijlal is an educator with over 40 years experience in teaching Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy at various schools. Her patient and caring nature, her commitment to her calling and her willingness to go above and beyond what is expected, especially with struggling learners, make her a very valuable Independent Contractor to support our team.
Support sessions will work as follows:
Remedial/extra sessions may be scheduled before school or during the utility session. Evidence shows that morning sessions are more conducive for such sessions.
Learners who fall behind may be withdrawn from some Mathematics sessions during the academic day to assist them with catching up.
Individual sessions cost R250.
Should you be interested in signing up for this or need more information, kindly mail secondary@parklands.co.za
Mrs Angel will be assisting Foreign Language learners who need extension classes in English as an Independent Contractor. She is well-known to many of our existing learners who got to know her as a member of the Preparatory Faculty. She is knowledgeable about teaching the foundation of language acquisition, she is kind and she is patient.
Remedial/extra sessions will be scheduled during the utility slot on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays or in the mornings before school and will cost R250 per session.
Kindly mail secondary@parklands.co.za if you would like to sign up for lessons.
Please ensure that learners abide by the Dress and Grooming requirements as set out in the Parent and Learner Information Directory. Please view some of the rules below.
DRESS AND GROOMING
A single stud or small ring earring (maximum 5mm in diameter with a thickness of 2mm) may be worn in the lobe of both ears. All other piercings should be replaced with a transparent silicone stud.
Transparent bristles may be used for any other piercings. Plasters may not be used to cover up earrings.
Jewellery prohibited by the Dress and Grooming policy will be confiscated and placed in a bag at reception. This can be collected on the last day of the quarter.
We do not allow “healing time” for piercings.
Pants must be properly pulled up and tied with a belt when necessary. Belts should be plain black with a simple buckle (rectangular or pin belt buckle).
Concealer is allowed, but no heavy foundation and/or make-up (eye-liner, mascara, etc.) Artificial eye lashes must look natural.
Shaving: Boys must be clean-shaven at all times.
Hair Length: Hair must be kept short above the collar or tied up. Long hair must all be tied back and fringes kept above the eyebrows. Long fringes must be clipped back. Long hair needs to be properly managed. If a learner has been given a second warning/demerits for poor hair management (neglecting to tie hair/trim fringes and hair around the ears and back), the privilege of long hair will be removed. No outlandish hair styling will be permitted.
LATENESS, ABSENTEEISM, CLOCKING IN AND LEAVING EARLY
Learners who arrive late without an email/call/correspondence from parents/guardians will receive a demerit. 3 lateness demerits will result in a Lateness Consequence.
If a learner is absent without an email/call/correspondence from parents/guardians, the learner will receive a general demerit. 3 general demerits will result in a General Consequence. If you are absent for an assessment, you will require a medical certificate or official documentation.
If a learner does not 'clock in', the learner will receive a general demerit. 3 general demerits will result in a General Consequence.
A learner will not be signed out and permitted to leave early without correspondence from parents. Parents/guardians need to report to reception to collect a learner.
Well done to Mr. Knaggs and Gerhard Vosloo (Grade 10) for showcasing the exciting work being done by our learners in the aerospace and STEM fields. Gerhard had the opportunity to share data retrieved from the ASRI Phoenix 1E rocket, launched on 4 December 2024, at the panel discussion “South Africa’s Role in the Global Space Economy” held at Innovation City, Cape Town. We also extend our congratulations to Mr. Knaggs for his valuable insights as a panelist in this important conversation about South Africa’s evolving role in the global space industry.

College parents are able to list their businesses in our Parent Business Directory for free – www.parklands.co.za/parent-business-directory/.
Should you be interested in marketing your business to over 1000 families, email: marketing@parklands.co.za to get started.
All listings will be subject to the College’s final approval.
This week's feature business is...
The College Crest and logos are registered trademarks and may not be used without permission from the Head of Marketing: cdevos@parklands.co.za
Please note that for security reasons, no parents or visitors are allowed past the Admin building during the week without reporting to reception. We have instructed our learners and staff to ask anyone without a Visitor's Badge to report to reception.
Please note that the College does not allow animals, especially dogs, on campus, except in the following cases:
Officially registered guide or support dogs (with the necessary harness).
Pets owned by personnel residing on campus for security purposes.
Almost on a daily basis we are asked to assist with finding lost cellphones. It has become an impossible task and we simply cannot expect staff to actively look for misplaced cellphones. We provide adequate facilities for the learners to lock their devices away.
If a learner misplaces or loses their cellphone, parents are required to report the missing device to the local police station.
Learners need to complete a report about the missing device at reception of the ICT desk in the event that it is handed in.
Air pods
We do not look for missing air pods. Learners have been told that they should rather not bring air pods to school, as they get lost easily.
All the best for the Autumn Quarter.
Kind regards
Sylvia Steyn
